Formula Guilt and How To Combat It

By Leva

We strongly believe here at Leva that all families have the right to choose how they want to nourish their babies, guilt-free! Our philosophy is that breast milk and formula should both be viewed as feeding options rather than opposing viewpoints. As if being a new parent isn't hard enough, many of our moms talk about dealing with guilt or shame for giving formula to their baby despite formula being a safe form of infant nourishment

Why the Guilt?

In the 20th century, people viewed formula feeding as a luxury and marker of status, but in recent years there has been a strong push from health organizations to promote breastfeeding as the optimal form of infant nutrition. Despite their good intentions, this has created a negative counter effect toward formula feeding, even though formula is an effective way to provide babies with the nutrition they need.

One study tells us, "formula feeding stigma stems primarily from perceptions of feeding intentions (rather than the belief that breast milk is superior) because mothers who planned to formula feed were viewed more negatively than those who planned to breastfeed, regardless of whether babies actually received formula or breast milk."

This preconceived notion can cause embarrassment in a mother if they are unable/choose not to perform one of the motherly tasks that society expects of them. In addition, they may face backlash from friends or family and put tremendous pressure on themselves to force something they no longer want, or that isn't working.

It's a Personal Choice

Feeding decisions are more complex than a simple black-and-white question of what is better. Many women attempt to breastfeed but face challenges they can't overcome, no matter how hard they try. Others have underlying health conditions that cause supply issues or make them unable to breastfeed. Some families have learned from their personal experience that choosing to formula feed is less stressful and promotes a healthier balance.

Just as it's important to value an individual's autonomy to make decisions about their own body, it is also important to honor people's right to choose how they provide nourishment to their child- as long as the child is safe and healthy. It doesn't have to be all or nothing either; formula can be used in combination with a breastfeeding routine in any ratio.

How to Combat Guilt

It's natural to have fluctuating feelings, and there is value in honoring your emotions wherever you are, but here are some things to keep in mind:

  • You have autonomy over your own body and what you do with it

  • Your baby's feeding plan is no one else's business

  • Formula is a safe and effective source of nourishment for your baby

  • Choosing to formula feed does not make you any less of a parent

  • There is no right or wrong, but simply different options

  • Your goals and plans can change with time

Our mission at Leva is to help you feel empowered in your decision-making process and to support your individual goals, judgment-free! There are no rights or wrongs in this deeply personal matter - both options lead to healthy children. We believe the right feeding plan is the one that feels best for each family.  Check out some real-life success stories with supplementation here.
