As technology advances, so do the options for breastfeeding mothers. One of the most popular new trends is hands-free breast pumps. These pumps allow moms to pump milk without having to hold them, which can be a huge help when they're on the go or trying to multitask.

Many companies are coming out with their own line of hands-free pumps, leaving mothers with lots of choices. We previously discussed that most insurance plans cover a breast pump with each pregnancy. Insurance doesn’t usually cover hands-free breast pump options. They are typically considered an “upgrade” and require an out-of-pocket expense.

Many mothers, including myself, take advantage of being able to pump for their babies while continuing their normal work, toddler chasing, and meeting packed schedules. As a lactation consultant, I highly encourage you to always use your hands-free pump as your secondary pump. While these are a really great option, they are best utilized after your milk supply is established. An “old school” wall pump is typically covered fully by insurance, helpful with establishing supply if there’s an issue, fully emptying the breast, and assisting with dreaded mastitis. These hand-free pumps make a great registry gift and a splurge for yourself! After all, you deserve it!
