The Most Important Breastfeeding Accessories
By Laura Silvas, RN IBCLC
One of the greatest benefits of breastfeeding compared to formula feeding is the fact that it is free. It also provides the best nutrition for your baby's growing needs.
In this modern internet era, it is easy to get caught up in buying all the latest breastfeeding gadgets that supposedly make the process easier. While most of the accessories advertised on the market can be helpful, they are not always necessary. However, there are a few items that can we consider essential. These items include a double electric pump (often covered by insurance), nursing bras, lanolin or nipple care cream, and storage bottles/milk bags. Read on to find out why these accessories can improve your breastfeeding outcomes.
Essential Breastfeeding Items
Breast pumps are an essential part of your breastfeeding journey, especially if your baby cannot breastfeed, is not nursing well, cannot latch effectively, or you're experiencing a low milk supply. Pumping can stimulate/maintain a healthy milk supply, avoid engorgement, and collect milk for the baby if you're not available to breastfeed. Furthermore, if you struggle with a low milk supply, you can pump in between breastfeeding sessions to help build your supply.
Beyond an electric pump, supportive nursing bras are a must. Many women try to get by with sports bras or regular everyday bras. A problem with using a regular bra is the change in the size of your breasts postpartum. During breastfeeding, your breasts also become fuller or emptier throughout the day. Sports bras or regular bras can compress your breasts and inhibit milk production if they are too tight. Additionally, many mothers develop clogged ducts or mastitis from the compression.
Another critical breastfeeding basic is caring for your nipples. Lanolin, nipple cream, or coconut oil can be applied to your nipples to ensure they remain supple and don't crack. Using these ointments before and after feeds together with pumping can help soothe the nipples. Another option is to express milk, rub it into the nipple, and air dry. (Pro Tip: using a barrier ointment such as the ones listed above before you shower can also help with nipple sensitivity)
Storage bottles or milk bags are also essential breastfeeding items. When choosing storage containers (or bags), ensure that they seal well and are BPA-free. You should also ensure that they freeze well, so it's best not to use glass or materials that may crack in the freezer.
Other Non-essential Items
Many other items available on the market could make breastfeeding easier but can be created with everyday household items. For example, Boppy pillows or My Breastfriend pillows can be handy, but simple pillows or rolled-up blankets will suffice. Other products include breast massagers, which relieve clogged ducts, but one can use a standard household product such as an electric toothbrush to the same end. Hot and cold packs, also commonly available at home, can help with nursing or pumping sessions to assist in let down and stimulating more milk to be released.
Other popular and helpful accessories include microwave steamer bags, cleaning sprays, or wipes for pump parts. I loved using the Haaka while nursing my youngest son. It allows you to collect milk on the opposite breast while you nurse, ensuring you don't waste a drop.
Many women also stock up on supplements and nipple shields in anticipation of breastfeeding. But, my recommendation is to wait until you start this journey with your baby. Each breastfeeding journey proves to be different. So, wait until your baby is born to decide what extra supplements are accessories you may need.
There are also plenty of nursing-friendly clothes on the market. However, some of these can be pretty pricey, and you may be able to make do with what you already have in your wardrobe. Always go with what is most comfortable - whether a blanket or a double shirt.
Conclusion
Overall, breastfeeding does not have to be costly, and many standard household items can be used to create the same effect as those pricy items you can find on the internet. Additionally, if you are having trouble with breastfeeding, contact a lactation consultant who will advise you on the best methods to ensure breastfeeding success.
